Advanced Debriefing Program

Program Description
At CAPE, we are driven by an unrelenting focus on improving human and system performance for the benefit of our patients.
Debriefing a simulated clinical event is the key to improving individual and team performance and ultimately patient outcomes. CAPE’s debriefing model is based on lessons learned from colleagues at NASA, the FAA and other industries where the risk to human life is high. CAPE’s full-day Advanced Debriefing Program is designed for experienced debriefers who wish to take their skills to the next level. The program offers participants multiple opportunities to function as both lead and assistant debriefers. Each debriefing is followed by a “debrief the debriefer” session where CAPE faculty provide expert feedback to participants to enhance their ability to deliver constructive, objective and concise debriefings.
Learning Objectives
- Understand how CAPE's debriefing model differs from other models in healthcare.
- Conduct the debriefing in a professional, business-like manner, whether the performance was exemplary or highly flawed.
- Focus Debriefing on:
- the actions of the individual learner
- how those actions contributed to the performance of the team
- how team performance influenced patient outcomes
- Develop strategies to:
- replicate actions that facilitate successful human and system performance
- avoid actions that are ineffective or harmful
- Use a consistent and objective approach to evaluate debriefings
